2 things you NEED to know about detoxing

By Su

detoxing“Detox” is a word that is becoming increasingly overused but it is not entirely understood.

There are many common misconceptions when it comes to detoxing, however, below are probably the two most common:

  1. Many people are under the impression that it only involves the intake of fluids; i.e. juices, smoothies and soups etc. This is not necessarily the case.
  2. Some people who are on a quest to lose weight believe that detoxing will fast track them to rapid weight loss.

The truth is, there is no fast track to losing weight and sustaining it. This is a fact that I’m sure many of us have experienced (much to our disappointment) throughout our individual journeys.  Losing weight takes dedication and time so it’s vital to remember that the journey shouldn’t be about striving for perfection but about focusing on progression!

So, you’ve made the decision to start detoxing. Now, it’s worth preparing yourself for the possible side effects of detoxing. Withdrawals are common and completely natural, so don’t worry! It would also be worth considering cutting a few things from your diet and tweaking your lifestyle a few days prior to the cleanse. For example, reduce the intake of alcohol, caffeine, refined sugar, and if you smoke – try and cut down, if you can’t cut your vice out completely!

We have put together a list of some withdrawal symptoms that you might experience while on any detox plan, but don’t fret, we have also provided a few natural remedy ideas for each symptom. These should help ease any discomfort you might feel. These withdrawal symptoms can occur between 24-48 hours after the cleanse has begun.

Common withdrawal symptoms while detoxing

“I’M STAAARVING!” Let’s face it, that’s not quite true. You’re just hungry. Those dreaded hunger pangs are a pain but try drinking another glass of water or a cup herbal tea. Most importantly, remember that this feeling is only temporary and remind yourself of the reasons why you’re doing this!

Suffering from headaches? Then try inhaling oil vapours. Lavender, Peppermint and Basil work particularly well. Just add two to four drops of your chosen oil for every two or three cups of boiling water. It could also be worth increasing your water intake – it’s so vital to stay hydrated, even more so during a detox. Lastly, if you’re in the mood to treat yourself, then try an Indian Head Massage.

Feeling nauseous? It’s all about the herbs! Herbal teas like Ginger, Cardamom and Basil leaf are great for fighting that dreaded feeling. A cold compress either on your forehead or the back of your head can work wonders. Also, try some simple slow, deep breathing exercises.

Dizzy? Slow and deep breathing exercises work well for dizziness as well. You could try a pinch of ground nutmeg and ground cumin seed in a cup of warm water and sip that slowly. This can also work for diarrhoea, which could also be a side effect of the detox.

Can’t go? Yes, as well as experiencing diarrhoea, you might also experience the opposite – constipation. This is often quite painful or just really uncomfortable so herbal teas like Senna, Aniseed and Fennel are great. Eating coconut oil is probably one of the best natural laxatives that help to relieve constipation.

Can’t sit still? Feeling irritable is common, so try meditating. Don’t know how? There are some really great apps available. Check out Omvana, you can sign up and listen to some guided meditations for free!

Feeling lethargic while detoxing? Listen to your body. If you need to rest, then rest! However, if you have things to do and need strength – have a tablespoon of coconut oil. Not only is it a good laxative but it is also a great, natural source of energy!

A couple more things to consider. Be mindful when you eat. Don’t rush. Savour each mouthful and be grateful! Before you eat, take a few deep breaths in order to relax and ground yourself. This will help shift your nervous system into a resting state. Your body will then be able to digest and receive the maximum nutrition available from your meal. Eating mindfully can be difficult, especially if you are feeling really hungry and have been counting down the minutes until your next meal or snack but your perseverance will be worth it!

Happy detoxing!
