Thanyapura’s Yin Yoga class is open to all levels and focuses on the tendons, ligaments, fascia and joints, helping to calm the mind and strengthen the body. The style of practice is slow paced. It consists of a series of passive postures, mainly on the floor. As it targets connective tissues, practitioners will remain in postures in a meditative state for longer periods – between five and twenty minutes. Yin yoga helps regulate the flow of energy in the body, softening the muscles and moving them closer to the bone. This form of yoga requires its students to sit longer in comfortable positions.
Meditation is achieved through stretching the joint’s connective tissues. Students will hold a supine and seated position for 3-5 minutes. Then the instructor will walk through the four principles of Yin Yoga, helping students to find their edge, embrace stillness, hold each pose, and then carefully release. These poses challenge the body’s deep tissues. Yin Yoga feels uncomfortable at first, but the unpleasant sensations will fade away as they are practiced more frequently. Yoga is a wonderful practice that benefits the individual in many ways.

Although yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, originating around the 5th or 6th Century BCE in ancient India, it has only relativeley recently gained prominance in the West – in the 20th Century.
Today, millions of people regularly practice forms of yoga, and aspects of its influence can be found in gyms, schools, places of worship, before or after competitive sports games, and in homes around the world.
Yin Yoga Methodology
