FINAworldcupThanyapura prides itself on providing the world-class facilities as well as high levels of competition in training to produce the best from the athletes. At the FINA World Cup in Dubai, Thanyapura-trained “Road to Rio” athletes broke national records for their respective countries. One week later at the ISB Swim Meet in Bangkok, the Thanyapura-PIA team won the high point team award and set impressive PB’s.

Two Nepalese athletes who train year-round at Thanyapura on the FINA “Road to Rio” program swam best times and broke national records at the FINA World Cup on the 6th and the 7th of November.

Our first swimmer, Sirish Gurung, broke two national records during his performances, first in the 200 freestyle lowering the old standard by over 5 seconds and stopping the clock in 2,05,71. He also broke the national record in 200 IM with a time of 2,24,47. He also was 0.01 seconds away from the national record in the 100 freestyle.

Sofia Shah claimed another three national records. The first one she claimed was the 50 freestyle with a time of 29,13. The next day, in heat one of the 100 freestyle, she broke that record with a time of 1,03, 23. One hour later she also broke the record of the 400 meter freestyle, becoming the first Nepali woman to ever go under five minutes in this event and improving the old standard by over 14 seconds to leave it at 4,53,93. She also swam the 200 freestyle where she went 2,15,19, more than three seconds under her best time and former national record of 2,18,93, but it does not count as a record since her teammate Gaurika swam in the same heat and performed one second faster.

All in all, a great meet where our representatives have broken a total of 7 national records, performed personal best times nine of their eleven swims, and come back home united and proud to have inspired the nation in these moments of need.

One week later, at the ISB meet in Bangkok, Thanyapura/PIA team won the high point team award while setting some really impressive PB’s.
