APOLIPOPROTEIN E (APOE)
Genetic Test for Alzheimer’s and other diseases
ABOUT THE SERVICES
The genetic variances we inherit are important factors in our future disease risk.
Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is a type of protein that is involved in the metabolism of cholesterol in the body. People have one of the three ApoE alleles — alternative forms of one of a gene pair at the same place on a chromosome that arise out of a mutation or variance — ApoE2, ApoE3, or ApoE4. Most people (about 75%) have the ApoE3 allele, while ApoE4 is present in about 15% of the population.
Genetic research has shown that ApoE4 polymorphism — a genetic variation in at least one percent of the population — is a strong risk factor for developing a number of conditions and serious diseases, including mild cognitive impairment (MCI), late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD), and Coronary Artery Disease (CAD).
The genetic test for apolipoprotein E (ApoE) involves a blood sample being sent to an off-site laboratory facility where the test is conducted.
Genetic testing can identify your ApoE allele status, enabling actions including lifestyle, exercise and nutritional changes to be taken to help reduce your risk of developing those and other diseases long before they develop.
