MTHFR MUTATION DNA TESTING

ABOUT THE SERVICES

MTHFR is methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, a gene containing DNA for producing the MTHFR enzyme needed for metabolising folate (vitamin B9).

By rough estimates, nearly half of the world’s population has a mutation or variation of the MTHFR gene. The mutation raises homocysteine levels in the body, which increases the risk of high blood pressure (hypertension), cardiovascular disease (CVD) and serious genetic disorders such as homocystinuria and spina bifida.

This test is designed to detect C677T and A1298C, the two most common MTHFR variants. A blood sample is drawn and sent to an off-site laboratory for testing.

BENEFITS

Testing for the MTHFR mutation provides an early opportunity — before medical problems develop and progress to more serious stages — to make changes to nutrition, diet and lifestyle habits to lower your risk for CVD and other MTHFR-related conditions. This may include, for example, eating more folate-rich foods and adding a folic acid supplement to your diet.
