Thanyapura has appointed renowned Bangkok coaching organisation Spin & Slice Tennis Academy to take over coaching operations at its own tennis academy in Phuket.
Over the past decade the Bangkok-based academy has consistently demonstrated an ability to produce top-ranked junior players who compete at national and International Tennis Federation tournaments, said Mr Philipp Graf von Hardenberg, Thanyapura President and Chief Executive Officer.
“Our aim is to elevate tennis in Phuket and, indeed, Thailand to the next level with the potent development formula Spin & Slice has come armed with, while at the same time expanding the number of our courts from six to ten,” Mr Graf von Hardenberg said.
“This new partnership is a convergence of the very best: world class tennis facilities and high performance coaching. This is something that is in Thanyapura’s DNA – the foundation that everything we’ve achieved and will achieve has been built on.”
Spin & Slice Tennis Academy will officially begin the new partnership on July 1st, 2015, with its owner and star Thai-German coach Timo Sivapruksa, a former German top 10 junior player whose coaching credits include stints with Nick Bolletierie Tennis Academy’s Camp Buehl in Germany, committed to dividing his time between Bangkok and Phuket.
Thanyapura and Spin & Slice have already formed a winning combination, with Phuket-based 12-year-old James Van Herzeele dominating his age group in singles and doubles at the King’s Cup national championships in Bangkok on May 16th-17th.
“When I played the championship point [in the singles] I felt so happy and relieved that I had achieved my goal of winning the most important tournament of the year,” said the Thai-Belgian junior. “To be ready for this tournament I had very hard weeks of training at Thanyapura with my [Spin & Slice] coach Timo [Sivapruksa] from Bangkok and coach [Pi] Ball from Thanyapura.”
Thanyapura Phuket’s reputation as an elite tennis facility was enhanced recently when it was named the Best Tennis Resort in Asia and one of the Top 50 Tennis Resorts in the world by Tennis Resort Online’s annual global survey. Last year the facility was named the Peter Burwash International Site of the Year and was ranked one of the planet’s Top 50 Tennis Resorts by the readers of tennisresortonline.com.
Other recent tennis highlights at Thanyapura include Maria Sharapova training there and heaping praise on the facility before the WTA finals last year and talented youngster Mattu Kamara from Sierra Leone becoming the first student to receive a tennis scholarship from Phuket International Academy – an International Baccalaureate World School, working hard to become a United World College (UWC) – and Thanyapura’s High Performance Sports Programme.
